The Art of Paper Folding: A Classic Crane

Welcome to a simple guide on creating a traditional origami crane. This beautiful form requires patience and precision, but the result is a symbol of peace and longevity.

What You'll Need:

A perfectly square piece of paper. Origami paper is ideal, but any square sheet will do. The size determines the final crane's dimensions.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Start with your square paper, colored side up. Fold it in half diagonally to form a triangle, then unfold.
  2. Fold in half diagonally again in the other direction, creating another triangle. Unfold. You should have an 'X' crease.
  3. Flip the paper over. Fold it in half horizontally to form a rectangle, then unfold.
  4. Fold it in half vertically, then unfold. You should now have '+' creases on this side.
  5. Bring the top, left, and right corners down to meet the bottom corner, collapsing the paper into a square base.
  6. With the open end of the square base pointing towards you, take the top layer's right edge and fold it to meet the center crease.
  7. Repeat with the top layer's left edge, folding it to meet the center crease.
  8. Fold the top triangular flap down over the folds you just made. Crease well and unfold these last three steps.
  9. Open the top flap upwards, using the creases you made to flatten it into a diamond shape. This is called a petal fold.
  10. Flip the paper over and repeat steps 6 through 9 on the other side. You should now have a kite shape with two "legs" at the bottom.
  11. Take one of the "legs" and fold it upwards along the center line. Crease firmly.
  12. Repeat with the other "leg." These will become the neck and tail of the crane.
  13. Now, perform an inside-reverse fold on one of the upward-pointing flaps to create the crane's head.
  14. Gently pull the wings apart to give the crane's body some volume.

Practice makes perfect! Don't be discouraged if your first few cranes aren't flawless. The beauty is in the process and the delicate outcome.
